i have decided to participate in nibblefest this month on ebay. the theme is moonlight. i did two quick pen and ink drawings. it's a contest with a theme. the person who has the most individual bids wins. it's really fun to see what everybody creates.

hi and happy almost valentine's day. i just finished up these two hearts for the upcoming Jinxed heart show.

a seahorse and an octopus. Jinxed is in Philly. if you're in the area check it out. the opening party for this show is February 11, 2011.

I came home from visiting a friend in Baltimore to this AWESOME surprise..... Jason totally emptied out the room and painted the first coat on the floor. Holy moly I love him!

We added checks, tiny skulls with crossbones and a border. All done with leftover paint. This coming weekend I can move everything back in.

hi everybody!
it's been so long! we are painting the floor of my studio.
i'm not getting much art done, but we have been slowly, steadily working on the house.
we are hoping to have the first room almost completely done in a couple of weeks. we've been stripping the floor in that room and have decided no more stripping of floors.....haha we will paint the rest.
i hope you are having a great summer!

i spent this past saturday in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Jason helped me set up my little space for the day. it was beautiful and i got to talk to so many wonderful people.

hi everybody,
i have been steadily working. getting ready for this weekend. there is a main street art festival in rehoboth beach, delaware. i will be set up from 11 to 4 on saturday at the ocean block of baltimore avenue.

native plant sale

Assateague Coastal Trust is having a native plant sale. it starts at 8am
at Golden Quarter Farm which is one of the most beautiful spots around Berlin.
a great place for last minute mother's day gifts.

this is our styrax obassia tree. it's in full bloom right now and it's glorious. it smells so good.
it was buzzing with bees when i photographed it yesterday-AND i spotted a hummingbird!
this is not actually a native plant, but sadly i don't have any photos of any of the many native plants that are in our garden. this tree is native to Japan and Korea. i will be sure to get lots of photos of natives as the season progresses.

spring blue painted stand

this is a little old wooden stand with a handle.
my best friend Michelle from Myrtle Dove Vintage in Baltimore gave it to me.
it will be so useful as a side table that can be moved to wherever it's needed.
i just finished painting it.
a nice shade of blue, with some vines, a couple of roses, silver feet, and a little clay black bird.
i'm painting lots of furniture, getting ready for an upcoming show in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

i am so looking forward to fresh tomatoes and herbs from our garden, watching the bats come out at dusk, mojitos, warm sand. this is a little series of paintings i did last year. acrylic on wood with nicely sanded edges. they have all found homes. either from my etsy shop or shows that i have been in. it makes me so happy to think of them on peoples walls. from california to the east coast. here's to an easy going summer. copyright 2011. all images are property of the artist- patti backer.

our beautiful old magnolia tree

this is our antique magnolia soulangiana. (saucer magnolia)
for the last few weeks it's just been beautiful.
we thought we might lose the blossoms to the snow, but thankfully that didn't happen. hooray.

we have also removed all the ivy from it's trunk. i'm sure the tree feels so much better.
now it is covered in bright, juicy green leaves. i love to be in the second floor of our house because it feels like we are in the top of this tree.
do you have a favorite tree? i don't think i could narrow it down to just one.

yesterday was beautiful! actually hot. we were unloading our new lawnmower when i saw something shiny in a nearby tree.
it was this really pretty black snake.

he was about 9 feet up and just swaying in the wind. we think he had just come out for the season and was trying to get as close to the sun as he could.

jason was super excited :)

crazy garden fix

this time last week i was in Philly with my Mom and friend Kathy. we started out our day in the city with a huge, incredibly delicious breakfast at Sabrina's. (if you are in Philly for any reason- take the time to go here! you will be so glad you did!) from there we made our way to the convention center to the Philadelphia Flower Show... if you have never been... it's crazy and fantastic... there you are in this giant convention center and there are gardens of every type with everything blooming all at once and thousands of people taking it all in. woodland gardens, cottage gardens, herbs and veggies. it's at the perfect time.... just when you are craving the smell of warm dirt the most.

in the last couple of weeks i have sold two things from my etsy vintage that made me sad, or made me realize that i wanted to keep them for myself. i'm always looking for cool old stuff and i pretty much only buy what i love. when i get home i decide what i will keep and what i will sell. i keep going back and forth on these plates. the darling little pastel bowls are staying.

the pyrex.....waffle ...waffle. that little bowl with the yellow scallop border kills me. so i guess i will keep that.

all these pastel, ice creamy colors are so spring like. what do you think i should hang on to?

a month ago i joined postcrossing. i thought it sounded like fun. you just click -send a postcard- and you receive a random address. i just received my first postcards. it's so fun to read what the sender's write. plus the postcard from singapore has an amazing stamp. big and colorful with a stork-billed kingfisher on it. i love kingfishers! i recommend postcrossing to everybody.
